Quarter 3
7th graders used Google Maps to create a 360 degree tour of the Colonies that they are studying in Social Studies. This week they started to explore a 3d design program and in a couple of weeks, they will design a 3d model of their dream home to accompany the words that they are learning in Spanish class. Next week, they will complete a course that encourages students to reflect on the role of STEM in their world and how their interests, skills, and aptitudes could connect them to future careers in STEM fields.
Quarter 2
Kindergartners have been learning to use the mouse and finding keys on the keyboard. They have been learning the names of the hardware in the classroom. and beginning to understand how it works. The students also practiced copying, pasting, moving, and sizing images on the computer by decorating their living room for Christmas. In January, the students will begin learning to code by giving a computer a sequence of instructions to follow and then learning to debug the program if those directions don't work. They will continue to practice finding the letters on the keyboard.
1st graders learned how to draw shapes and use the paint bucket to add color to create a drawing in Google. Then, they studied some of the common icons for programs and tools that we use in class. The students also learned how to use the Pic Collage app on the iPads. In January, they will learn to code using conditions, loops, and functions. Students will continue practicing finding the keys on the keyboard.
2nd graders studied the keyboard and then learned how to use shift, the spacebar, backspace, and all of the punctuation keys while publishing their All About Me story that they wrote in their Language Arts class. Students added an image and their name using Word Art. They also learned how to use the Pic Collage App on the iPads. In January, they will learn to crop an image and to code using conditions, loops, and functions. Students will continue practicing typing with their fingers on the home row keys. They are expected to be practicing at home 2-3 times a week.
3rd graders created a digital notebook for their computer terminology. Students learned how to add color and design to their pages. So far, their notebook has a title page, table of contents, and 6 pages, each containing a term. Students added the term, the definition, and an image to each page to help them commit these 6 terms to memory. As we study new units, the students will add new terms to their notebook. Students also learned how to crop images and use the Pic Collage App on the iPads. In January, they will begin to build a strong foundation of basic coding concepts using Code.org. Students will also continue to learn to type without looking at the keyboard. They are expected to be practicing at home 2-3 times a week.
4th graders reviewed tools such as inserting headers, hyperlinks, special characters, voice typing, adding comments, researching within Google, citing sources, using the dictionary tool, and cropping photos. They also had a chance to learn to use the Pic Collage App on the iPads. In January, students will continue to learn the importance of using keywords to search for information online, select appropriate websites, locate information within a website, and avoid plagiarism. Then, they will learn to write code to create interactive stories and games using Code.org. By the end of the quarter, students are expected to type 8 words per minutes with a 90% accuracy.
5th graders reviewed tools such as inserting headers, hyperlinks, special characters, voice typing, adding comments, researching within Google, citing sources, using the dictionary tool, and cropping photos. Then, they focused on the importance of using keywords to search for information online, selecting appropriate websites, locating information within a website, and avoiding plagiarism. 6th graders reviewed tools such as inserting headers, hyperlinks, special characters, voice typing, adding comments, researching within Google, citing sources, using the dictionary tool, and cropping photos. Students researched a certain type of Scientist in Science class and then communicated what they discovered by creating a Discovery Education board, a Prezi, or an animated gif. Some of those were presented to the Grandparents while they visited the classrooms in November. They also had a chance to learn to use the Pic Collage App on the iPads. In January, students will continue learning the importance of using keywords to search for information online, select appropriate websites, locate information within a website, and avoid plagiarism. Then, students will write code to create a dance party using Code.org,
7th graders reviewed tools such as inserting headers, hyperlinks, special characters, voice typing, adding comments, researching within Google, citing sources, using the dictionary tool, and cropping photos. Then they used Book Creator to publish a book for their Kindergarten buddies. After getting to know their buddy, the students wrote a Halloween story and presented the book as a Christmas present. Students also learned to use the Pic Collage App on the iPads. In January, they will write code to create a dance party using Code.org and explore careers in STEM.
8th graders reviewed tools such as inserting headers, hyperlinks, Word Art, special characters, voice typing, adding comments, researching within Google, citing sources, using the dictionary tool, and cropping photos. They also had a chance to learn the Pic Collage and You Doodle Apps. In January, they will write code to create a dance party using Code.org, explore careers in STEM, and use technology to create illusions to mirror what they are learning in Art.

Quarter 1
Kindergartners have been working hard to log into the network. Each week I will introduce them to a new typing game to help them find their letters on the keyboard. We will learn the names of the hardware that we use in the computer lab and we discuss how it is used.
First graders have been working hard to remember how to log into the network and their Google Drive. We are reviewing basic technology terminology, mouse skills, and keyboarding. They can practice these skills at home by using the links on the First grade Rocks page.

Second graders are reviewing basic technology terminology, mouse skills, and how to use Google Chrome & Google Drive. They have started to learn how to type using Typing.com.
Third graders started with a quick review of technology icons and are now learning about the Chromebook that they are using in class every day. They will continue to use Typing.com to learn to type, but this year they will type with the keys covered.
4th - 8th grade students will come to the Computer Lab once a week for the entire school year. This month students are focusing on being a good digital citizen.
Be Strong
Be Smart
Be Kind
These are all topics that our parents didn’t have to think about when they were raising us. Please have these conversations with your children as well.
Homework is assigned and will be graded. Students will receive a ✔ for appropriate work, an X if work needs improvement, and a + for outstanding work and effort. All homework will be assigned through Google Classroom. Students can check Google Classroom for due dates and directions.
